Outfitter's Legacy Project Mission

THE OUTFITTER'S LEGACY PROJECT exists to preserve the rich traditions of wilderness outfitting while cultivating the next generation of stewards, leaders, and public land advocates. Through focused programs for youth, military veterans, and trail-based recreationists, we provide hands-on education in backcountry skills, land stewardship, wilderness restoration including forestry, native fish, and trail maintenance with the method of animal packing. By honoring the legacy of working landscapes and fostering community connection to public lands, we empower individuals to lead with purpose, resilience, and respect for wild places.

Our Journey

Our Mission

Discover the story behind our dedication to preserving wilderness traditions and engaging the community.

Our Vision

The Outfitters Legacy Project is committed to creating lasting impacts by connecting people with nature and fostering a spirit of conservation. Our vision is to inspire a love for the outdoors and preserve our wild heritage for generations to come.

Our Programs

Young Mule Co.

Our mission is to cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards and community leaders through comprehensive outdoor education rooted in hands-on experience, personal responsibility, and respect for natural landscapes. We provide youth with immersive opportunities to engage in backcountry etiquette, equine-based learning, wilderness trail stewardship, and the time-honored traditions of mule packing.

By integrating practical skill-building with environmental ethics, our programs foster a deep and lasting connection to the land, promote resilience, teamwork, and self-reliance, and inspire a lifelong commitment to conservation. We are dedicated to preserving both wild spaces and the cultural heritage of backcountry travel, ensuring that young people not only learn how to navigate the wilderness, but how to care for it—and for one another—along the way.

Valor Ridge Outfitters

Valor Ridge Outfitters is a wilderness-based healing initiative for military veterans, rooted in the restorative power of nature, horses, and hard-earned peace. Through immersive retreats, trail restoration, mule packing, and riverside rest, we offer space to reconnect—with land, with purpose, and with self. By fostering trust through horsemanship, rebuilding confidence through shared work, and restoring trails that serve the public good, Valor Ridge Outfitters honors the strength it takes to climb again.

Valor Ridge Outfitters also wants to provide veterans through high-impact backcountry experiences that combine precision, grit, and purpose. Built for those seeking more than rest—those ready for the next climb—we focus on wilderness packing, long-distance marksmanship, horsemanship, and trail stewardship. In rugged terrain and under open skies, veterans reclaim discipline, build lifelong camaraderie, and engage with the land through service and skill. This is not a retreat—it’s a return to mission, with new tools and deeper meaning.

Legacy Trails Restoration

The Trail Recreation and Land Stewardship program of The Outfitters Legacy Project is dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of our nation’s wilderness areas. We mobilize community members, youth, and volunteers to engage directly with public lands through traditional backcountry practices such as mule packing, alpine lake fish stocking, native tree planting, and multi-use trail rehabilitation. Our efforts are focused on maintaining access to remote wilderness corridors while minimizing environmental impact, ensuring these vital public landscapes remain open, resilient, and ecologically sound for future generations.

Through hands-on education, intergenerational mentorship, and coordinated fieldwork, we empower individuals to become active stewards of the land. By blending heritage outfitting techniques with contemporary conservation values, we foster a deep-rooted sense of responsibility and connection to the outdoors.

High Mountain Horsemanship

High Mountain Horsemanship exists to preserve and pass down the discipline of true horsemanship through immersive, ground-up education with horses—from untouched mustangs to mountain-ready pack stock. Our mission is to develop capable, compassionate horsemen and women through honest work, foundational horsemanship, and the earned trust between horse and human. We train both people and animals from the ground up—through colt starting, pack training, trail readiness, and backcountry experience.

At the heart of our work is the belief that horses do more than carry loads—they help lighten them. By working with untouched mustangs, green colts, and seasoned trail stock, participants gain more than skills; they build confidence, patience, and emotional strength. The process is mutual: as horses learn to trust and carry, so do the people beside them.

Through daily work, quiet leadership, and the rhythm of the rein, our program becomes a space where healing happens in motion—on the trail, in the round pen, and beside the fire at the end of a long day.

We train for the trail—but we also grow something deeper: grounded minds, steady hands, and hearts with purpose.

We offer a progressive curriculum for youth, veterans, and emerging stockmen that builds confidence, respect, and working partnerships between human and horse. Whether in the round pen, on the ridgeline, or packing tools into the backcountry, participants gain hands-on experience that cultivates responsibility, leadership, and legacy.
